The Right Message

Becoming the Right Youth Group

The goal is to become the right youth group—not just changing logistics like times or service order, but truly changing ourselves. We want to reorient how we live and interact with one another. Consider the alternative: the wrong youth group. No one is interested in that. We want a youth group that is for you and for God.

The right youth group welcomes people, makes them comfortable to interact, but uncomfortable with sin. Then it encourages them again by preaching Jesus Christ. We don't want a youth group you attend because your parents make you. We want one you long for—a place that leaves an emptiness when you're not there. This youth group glorifies God and enjoys Him forever. That's your reason for existence: to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

God created you, saved you, and brought you into right relationship with Him not just to save you from sin, but so you would enjoy Him eternally. This youth group will maintain that reality in our lives. We won't settle for mediocrity. We want youth who excel in the Christian faith—masters of theology and doctrine at this age.

Don't think you're too young to master biblical truth. God told Jeremiah, "Don't say, 'I am only a youth.'" As youth, you can revolutionize your heritage, family dynamics, and home situation by recognizing your purpose to glorify God and enjoy Him forever. That's the youth group that makes a difference, impacts lives through the preaching of God's Word.

Normally, life prioritizes school, family, activities, with youth group as a hobby if it fits. But what if we never blink at choosing church over extracurriculars? Sports can't offer what church does. In John 6, after feeding 5,000, most walked away when Jesus preached truth. He asked His disciples, "Do you want to go away as well?" Peter replied, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life."

That's the choice: youth group with words of eternal life, or something temporary? In America, you'll struggle between instant enjoyment and eternal value. The early church in Acts 2 met daily in the temple and homes, devoting themselves to apostles' teaching, prayer, breaking bread, and fellowship. We meet less, but our gatherings can be powerful because the Word of Jesus is good.

The Warning Against Drifting

The way to become the right youth group starts with a warning, especially from Hebrews' warning passages. We must take seriously the words of eternal life.

Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will. (Hebrews 2:1-4)

1. Focused on Jesus

The right youth group is focused on Jesus. Hebrews 2:1 says, "Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard." The "therefore" connects to chapter 1, where God spoke to us by His Son, Jesus. Jesus made propitiation for our sins—turning God's wrath away by His death on the cross. God is no longer angry with us because Jesus atoned for all our wrongs.

Hebrews 1 also shows Jesus is better than everything, including angels—a key point for the original Jewish audience who overemphasized angels. In our context, Jesus is better than everything. So the right youth group focuses on Him.

2. Focused on the Message of Jesus

We must pay attention to what we've heard from Jesus. Paying attention is a battle, especially for youth amid distractions like phones and entertainment. The secular and demonic worlds vie for your attention. But if you know Jesus is greater and satisfied your soul, staying engaged won't be hard.

We must make every effort, fearing drift. Hosea 4:6 says, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Don't come as spectators. The right youth group refreshes, encourages, equips, convicts, and sends you out with marching orders.

Why fear neglect? The message was reliable, declared by angels, with every disobedience punished. How shall we escape neglecting such great salvation? Drifting is like an unanchored boat in a harbor heading for rocks and shipwreck. Doing nothing guarantees drifting to destruction. But positively, God confirmed the message with signs, wonders, miracles, and the apostles attested it. It's the most reliable message for eternal life.

The right youth group talks about judgment for sin, confronting it directly.

3. Focused on the Right Message

The right youth group has the right message—the same confirmed, reliable one from the first century, presented infallibly in God's Word.

Questions for the Right Youth Group

Ask yourself these:

  1. Does your youth group focus on the superiority of Jesus to all things? Or just mention Him occasionally as a friend for hugs? Is He the primary soul-satisfying reality?
  2. Does it warn about dangers of sin and falling away? Does it treat all sin seriously—lying, anger, rudeness—not just big ones? Does it call you to forgive, knowing every sin offends God and grieves the Spirit?
  3. Does it prove it's the right message by matching the first-century gospel in your Bible? Does it make you check the text?

This youth group will strive to answer yes in this series.
